HISTORY
The history of establishing para-military corps in institutions of learning in Nigeria dates back to 1976 during the military regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo as military Head of State in the Supreme Military Council when the armed forces of Nigeria conceived the idea and knew cadet training was important for character building and a valuable instrument in the general upbringing of boys and girls while inculcating military training, ethics and discipline, virtues of order, teamwork in the youths. Hence the University Officer Training Corps (UOTC) which was later renamed the National Cadet Corps was introduced
The National Cadet Corps in Owerri can trace its origin to 1984 on the 10th of October when the Nigerian Army from Obinze established the association in Government Secondary School Owerri with the aim to bring up young boys in a strong mode of discipline who will in the future become better persons in the society.
The movement was under the army until 2000 when it withdrew its
support with the handover of government from military to civilian in 1999,
which cost the movement a lot of crises of which some were leadership and
financial problem. Members had to provide their own uniforms.

In 2009 leadership was restored, Cdt. Lit. Chinedu took charge as
commandant then in class five, he saw to the ranking of members, restoring
discipline to the team and production of ID Cards and Mr. Mba .O as patron and
Mrs. Chijioke Uche as Matron.
In 2010 three other offices were created by Cdt. Lit Chinedu to add
up to the existing office of the commandant, Cdt. Second Lit. Ulogwara Emeka
took over office as commandant, with cdt. W.O Emerenwa victor Jmv as his deputy
commandant, cdt. W.O Odoemelam Nkemakolam as discipline officer and cdt. W.O
Raymond Onwuka as treasurer. In order to meet up to the challenges of time the
saw to the division of the movement in to three departments which includes,
First Aid, Security and secret Detective department which helped in the
eradication of Cultism in Government Secondary School Owerri.
In 2011 Cdt. W.O Odoemelam Nkemakolam was appointed commandant and
promoted to Lieutenant alongside Umune Victor, and Onwuka Ray while Emerenwa
Victor jmv was promoted to Captain and maintaining his office as deputy
commandant, two other offices were created to add up to the existing ones s
which includes secretary and junior coordinator. Under their administration the
hosted her 27 years anniversary and as part of the celebration the payed a vist
to their founding Fathers the Nigerian Army as the 34 Artillery Bridge Obinze
thanks to lady Chijioke Uche and Mr. Mba .O .
They year 2012 marked a great history in the ACFA, when cdt. Captain
Emerenwa Johnvianney saw to the development of the Army Cadet Ruling Council
ACRC to help in the development of cadet within the state, through the help of
this first council they movement was able to connect to the cadet at federal
Government College Okiwge.
In 2013 the ACRC with the help cdt. Captain Emerenwa Johnvianney
introduced the movement at Owerri City School.
In 2014 four schools had joined the cadet movement, the ACRC also
saw to the registration of cadet with the Conference for all uniformed youth
Organization in Imo State CUYO.
In 2015 the movement changed her name to the National Cadet
Corps (Nigeria) at the National Level, the ruling council was also changed to
the Cadet Council of Superiors, it also held her first basic camp that year.
In early 2016 the movement conducted her second camp with the theme
to enhance the best potentials of cadet through education. It also convoked her
first major conference were it discussed issues that affects her organization.
It also enrolled Hon. High Chief Rodney Ajaelu the commissioner for public
safety, youth and sport as her state patron .
Today we have seven cadet detachments with about 400 cadets in Imo
State.
